Here
is a report from Chris Paus (Bay-Rab Acres) about her mare, BRA DAFINA
ALIMAR 575418 (Nafis Rafiq x Shakeela Lee).
Photo was taken in April at a NATRC ride.
WE DID IT!
Ali and I did a 25 mile competitive trail ride today (9-9-07). It was
awesome. perfect weather, low sixties while we were riding, overcast
sky, perfect for the horses to work hard without getting overheated.
This was at Perry Lake State Park which is a little ways north of the
Kansas state capitol of Topeka.
Wake up call was at 5 a.m. Gads, I had getting up early. Ride started
at 7. Riders were sent out 1 min apart. We had a 5 mph pace. Your ride
time is dependent on your start time. Ali and I were the 12th ones out,
so our start time was 7:12 a.m. We had a 30 min hold mid point
which is added to your ride time. And you can finish 15 in fast or slow
and not lose points. Our optimal time was 5:15 to 5:45 ride time.
The first loop was 14 miles, mostly single track trail, very wooded and
rocky. Much of the trail was thru untrimmed cedar stands, lots of "S"
curves. Ali led the group I rode with. She just wanted to
zooooooom! Remember the Ewoks on airbikes in the star wars movie?
Zooming thru the redwoods? It felt like that. Zoom, bend left, zoom,
bend right, zoom, up , zoom down We did most of the ride at a
good trot, finishing the 14 miles in 2 hours.
Came into camp for the vet check. Ali's heart rate was 44 bpm, which is
perfect, no points lost on HR. She ate and drank well, then we were
back out for an 11 mile loop. That loop had more meadows and
fields for good canters, but also some wooded areas. I didn't duck
under a low branch and smack! Really rung my bell on that one! So glad
I had on my helmet!
We had to walk slowly, letting her graze a lot, the last two miles in
because we had ridden so fast for the day. We had to kind of diddle
around and kill time to not finish too fast. I had been so
worried because her HR while riding runs really high. But she drops
like a rock when we stop. She did the whole ride barefoot, not even
boots. Her second HR was 39 bpm! I freaked, that is incredibly
awesome after 25 miles!
We ended up taking 3rd place. The scores were very close for us to get
97.75 out of 100 possible points and end up in 3rd!
She lost points as follows:
.5 dehydration
.5 head and mouth (rubs from bridle)
.25 trail booboo (little cut at coronet band on left front)
.5 willingness
.5 attitude (these last two were from the last trot out at the final
vet check, she was kind of like, I just trotted 25 miles and you want
me to do it again?????)
She had great attitude, impulsion and willingness during the ride
itself. Anyway, I was very, very pleased with her performance
today. And mine too with my arthritic knee. The vet was surprised she
did so well because Ali is kind of a chunk, not the streamlined Arabs
most people ride. But she out performed a lot of them! But we put in a
lot of training miles, so I wasn't a bit surprised!
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Oh and we finished in perfect time!
I LOVE THIS MARE!
